Assessment for the lesson

Using the digital images acquired via the web-cam, the student will create a presentation that illustrates the life-stages of the Brassica Butterfly. The assessment rubric will be shared with the students prior to beginning the exercise, and will include grade components for:
  • Correctly sequencing the images.
  • Brief, well-written, correct summaries or explanations of the life stage illustrated in each image.
  • A graph or timeline of the life-stages that utilizes metric measurements.
  • Building an effective presentation.
  • Performing an effective presentation.
  • A journal or log of steps, observations, measurements, and procedures.

Special Considerations for this lesson

(This should include safety concerns and modifications for special populations)

  • Standard precautions for handling of live materials: (clean or sterile environment, protection of the organisms from stress, avoidance of releasing the organisms into the classroom environment, proper disposal of organisms and their waste upon completion of the exercise).
  • Safe disposal and handling procedures for biological wastes.
  • Students should not touch the specimens or their environment with their bare ands (for the safety of the student as well as to prevent contamination of the larval environment).
  • Take care that the room or lab-location is not sprayed for pests during the exercise.
  • Caution that students who may be allergic to molds are supervised, and that any moldy pieces of cabbage are quickly removed from the study location (one possible by-product of rotting cabbage is mold).
  • Students who need assistance may work with partners in accordance with their IEP (Individualized Education Plan).
