Audacity

Open source sound editing software. Audacity exists in Mac, Windows, and Linux versions, and is free for use under the GNU Public license. The software may be downloaded from the URL listed to the left.

GIMP

An open source graphics software package. GIMP 2 (GNU Image Manipulation Program) exists in Mac, Windows, and Linux versions, and is free for use under the GNU Public license. The software's home page is the URL listed to the left. It imports and creates files in most common graphics formats, and has most of the functionality of PhotoShop and Paint Shop Pro without the cost. One of the best bargains in software in the world. Windows installer files may be downloaded from this link (be sure to download the stable version of both the installer file and the GTK runtime environment -- GTK is a cross-platform interface code library, giving software a common look and feel on the various operating systems, and should be installed first).

OpenOffice

Open source productivity software package. OpenOffice exists in Mac, Windows, and Linux versions, and is free for use under the GNU Public license. The software may be downloaded from the URL listed to the left. It imports and creates files in most Microsoft Office file formats, and includes a sophisticated Word Processor, Presentation Package, and Spreadsheet Package, as well as many other components. Another of the best bargains in software in the world.

TuxPaint

An open source kid-friendly graphics software program, TuxPaint exists in Mac, Windows, and Linux versions, and is free for use under the GNU Public license. The software may be downloaded from the URL listed to the left. TuxPaint was recently named "Macintosh product of the year" (although it was originally developed for Linux). A drawing program (with sound) that is truly a joy for children (and adults who act like children), this high-quality program is a favorite of almost every educator that tries it out.

SMA Anasazi

A webcam animation software package. Stop Motion Animator (SMA Anasazi) is free Windows-only software. The software may be downloaded from the URL listed to the left. It requires an existing webcam installation and makes the production of stop-motion movies an easy-to-do, fun process. A great tool for the classroom.
